1. pg 135 (Chillingworth tries to find out who Pearls father is.)

He is really curious to find out who the father of Pearl is. He sneaks around and tries to find clues and other sorts of things. When he finds out who it is he plans to torture him and mess with him a lot. He really doesn’t like him already even though he doesn’t know who it is. He is sure to find out who the father is.

2. pgs. 138-140 (Chillingworth thinks that Dimmesdale is the father of Pearl)

He is trying to find evidence to prove that Pearls father is Dimmesdale. He is very suspicious and is sure that Dimmesdale is the father of Pearl. He asks lots of questions and does a lot to find out if he is right about Dimmesdale.

3. pgs. 145-148 (Dimmesdale is Pearls father)

Dimmesdale is going to get into lots of trouble if people in the town find out that he is the father of Pearl. He will lose his job and be banished and tortured. So he really needs to watch his back to make sure he doesn’t get caught.

4. pgs. 145-150 (Chillingworth starts to torture Dimmesdale.)

Chillingworth is starting to mess with Dimmesdale. He is waiting for everyone to find out it was him and he wants him to get into lots of trouble. Chillingworth is making a big deal about it and is really trying to start trouble. I don’t think it’s going to work the way he wants it to but I still think that Dimmesdale is going to get into trouble.

5. pgs. 152-158 (Pearl turns 7 years old.)

Pearl is now old enough to see everything that is going on around her. She sees what people are saying and what is happening. She also is starting to ask questions about her mom. I feel bad for her because she has to listen to all the drama that is going around about her family. She didn’t do anything and is getting blamed for it.

6. pg 164 (Chillingworth made people believe that Satan took Dimmesdale’s gloves the returned them.)

Chillingworth is trying to make people not like Dimmesdale. Satan didn’t really take his gloves. It’s just a stupid little prank that Chillingworth is trying to pull on Dimmesdale.

7. pgs. 168-174 (Hester isn’t hated by the town anymore)

People in the town are starting to realize that it wasn’t that big of a deal and that she is a strong woman for putting up with all the trouble she had to go through. She never gave up or told who the father of Pearl is. She just took all the blame to herself. She knew that Chillingworth would lose all he had for it and so she just kept quiet.

8. pgs. 174-185 (The meaning of the “A” changed.)

The ‘A’ now means able, because she was able to go through all the trouble herself and stay strong the whole time. She never told or gave up. She just kept living her life day by day, accepting all the punishment even though she could’ve just put it off onto Dimmesdale.

9. pgs. 185-190 (Hester is some what taking blame for Dimmesdale)

She is trying to stand up for Dimmesdale. She knows that he will lose everything he has if the town finds out that he is the father of Pearl. She is doing him a big favor. She is a strong woman and is just trying to help him out. She doesn’t want anymore trouble to come then what already has.

10. pgs. 190-194 (Hester hates Chillingworth)

Hester finally realizes what a jerk Chillingworth is. She notices what a prick he really his and how he is setting Dimmesdale up and torturing him. So she hates him with a passion. I think that is good because he is mean and she should hate him for all the things he is doing to Dimmesdale. Chillingworth is just trying to start trouble for no reason.

11. pgs. 190-195 (Pearl wants to know what the “A” stands for)

Hester doesn’t really know what to think of this. She doesn’t tell Pearl the whole story. She is just realizes how much she has grown up and that she needs to be careful so pearl doesn’t end up not liking her mom or dad.

12. pgs. 190-196 (Hester says the “A” is the mark of the black man)

Hester doesn’t tell her the whole story because she is afraid of what might happen if Pearl knows everything that happened and that’s going on. It might start problems within the family and that wouldn’t be good.

13. pgs. 197-200 (Hester and Dimmesdale meet and talk)

Dimmesdale talks about how unhappy he has been for the past 7 years. He is realizing his guilt. Hester and Dimmesdale discuss all the problems they have had in the past 7 years. Dimmesdale confesses his feelings to Hester and she helps his realize things he didn’t know.

14. pgs. 200-207 (Chillingworths plan is working on Dimmesdale)

Chillingworths plan is working on Dimmesdale by torturing him. Dimmesdale is becoming insane. Chillingworth is torturing him really bad to where Dimmesdale is about ready to give up. He is sick and tired. He can’t handle anymore.

15. pgs. 210-211 ( Hester is going to leave the colony.)

Hester is tired of all the problems and drama that’s going on in the colony. She has decided that she is going to just leave. I think it will be better for her and other people around her if she leaves.

16. pgs. 211 (Hester takes off the ‘A’ and throws it into the leaves)

She wants to just forget any of this ever happened and just go back to the way things were. She feels relief without the ‘A’. I think it’s good for her. She doesn’t need the ‘A’. It’s stupid. I know that’s just their religion and belief but it’s pointless. Just to hate someone for so long and make them miserable for their own issues.

17. pgs.215-219 (Hester thinks that it’s time for Dimmesdale to meet Pearl.)

Hester thinks it’s a good idea is Dimmesdale was to finally meet Pearl. I think it might start some trouble but I’m not really sure. It might a little strange for Pearl, and a little awkward for Dimmesdale.

18. pgs. 219-222 (Pearl gets attached to the ‘A’)

Pearl doesn’t like it when she sees her mom without the letter. She has become attached to the letter. She thinks there is something missing on her mom when she isn’t wearing the letter.

19. pgs. 223-225 (Dimmesdale has trouble believing what happened isn’t a dream.)

He thinks it was a dream when he went into the forest. It’s hard for him to gather all that into his head.

20. pgs. 227-235 (Dimmesdale has changed.)

He has changed his attitude towards things and is trying to be a better person. He has learned something from talking to Hester and Pearl. I think he is doing good for all the things that has happened to him in the past.

21. pgs. 236-239 (Pearl is doing more for herself now and taking responsibilities)

Pearl goes to the market and other places to take care of things. She is getting more mature and responsible. She is going to soon find things out about her parents and she isn’t going to like it and have to talk to her parents about it before it gets her into trouble.

22. pgs. 240-245 (the governor is to pass by)

Pearl is very curious about what is going on and asks lots of questions. She is leaning so much. She soon will be very smart and can stand up and do things all on her own.

23. pgs. 246-251 (Pearl starts asking questions about the priest)

Pearl starts asking questions about Dimmesdale while he is walking in the little parade ceremony and Hester has to try and keep her quiet so no one over hears and tells. If someone hears then Dimmesdale will get into a whole bunch of trouble.

24. pgs.252-258 (Mistress Hibbins knows about Hester and Dimmesdale)

Hester needs to hope that she doesn’t say anything to anyone because that could start a lot of trouble that isn’t needed. Mistress Hibbins is trying to help Hester. She is giving her some simple advice and tips. Hester should listen to her and maybe it will help her out a little.

25. pgs. 259-267 (Dimmesdale tells the colony that he is the father of Pearl.)

Everyone in the colony gets mad and doesn’t like them. Hester and Dimmesdale are both put to shame. Dimmesdale is also dying and that’s what made him tell the truth because he didn’t want to die with that secret hidden all his life.
